Hi all, I wonder if any of you can help me to decide what to do?
My 2008 24" iMac 500Gb HDD is pretty much done for. It just died on me without warning. After a lot of messing about I did manage to get it working long enough to clone it onto the first external drive I could get my hands on (from Argos, luckily we had some gift vouchers. Irony here is that ebuyer is a mile from my house, but I wanted it quick).
I already had a time machine back up on another drive, but I obviously wanted to keep that safe under the circumstances and run my mac from the new drive. I'm also half way through doing a back-up to Crashplan, which I've just signed up for, so the mac has been running constantly, I normally turn it off overnight etc. This works fine, usb2 is a little slower than the internal, but it's doing a pretty good job considering.
I'm pretty well backed up!
I'm wondering about my options now...
I can continue as I am, running from my external, no hardship, but not exactly perfect.
I can take the mac to the Apple store, 40 miles away, but arguably worth it, although I'm not covered by apple care, and take the hit getting them to fit me a new drive. I've no idea how expensive this would be. Either that or find someone else to do it.
Fit a new drive myself. I'm not really scared of doing this, but I would hate to make things worse. I've looked at tear downs and guides online and it looks complex, but do-able.
But if I do this, I need to know what tools I need and more importantly.... what drive to buy.
I could even try for an SSD if I could find one cheaply enough, but I don't want to spend a fortune.
I guess my main questions are: Does anyone know how much Apple would hit me for to fix it, What drive should I get if I do have a go, and does anyone have experience of doing this?
I could leave well enough alone, but it would also be the perfect excuse for an upgrade!
Cheers,
Rich
