I think Dad's Army is a worthy addition to British Icons.
It lampoons, in the nicest possible way, the Home Guard. It has given rise to several catchphrases, still uttered and understood 30 years after the show finished.
So let's hear it for the Walmington-on-Sea Platoon of the Home Guard, OIC Captain George Mainwaring.
Hip-hip...

Well, Christmas is sorted. Just had the delivery from Amazon of the complete set of Dad's Army DVDs. It includes series 1, three surviving episodes of series 2, and the full sets of serieseseses 3 through 9, plus the Christmas specials.
Thankfully, it doesn't include the films.

That’s a lot to sit through. A shame that they have lost a lit of the early episodes though. Do they have the US pilot as a special "extra"?

Do they have the US pilot as a special "extra"? Nope. Thankfully. Dad's Army wins because it's timeless. It doesn't date like other classic TV comedy has. I can still laugh at Steptoe & Son, The Likely Lads or Rising Damp, but they're firmly stuck in the era of glam rock, industrial action and flares.
