My task for 2009 is to get my systems organised, but I have no idea what is the best way to do this. I need something that will work across all of my systems, thus providing portability, but I also need something that will ensure data integrity. A couple of years ago, I managed to destory a laptop hard drive, which contained the only copies of memorable family photographs. The recovery experts I sent the drive to declared it unreadable, so I was not best popular with the family! At home, I have a simple wireless network with a cheapo router. There is a single Apple MacBook and several PCs which connect to this. One PC also has an XBox 360 connected by ethernet and another PC has a printer connected by USB. At the moment, I haven't spent any time setting it all up, so none of the devices can actually see eachother at the moment. I once tried to share the printers with other devices, but nothing seemed to work. I have a large-ish collection of work, music and photographs, which I would preferably like to be accessible from all of the computers on the network. I would also like some method of automatically backing up files, as well as sharing printers. Has anybody got any suggestions, please? Thanks, Peter.

pg.At the moment there is a lot of buzz in the press about this. www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/mediasmart-server/The HP Mediasmart server. You will understand better than me but apparently it is designed to work on a PC network. In fact it needs a PC to set it up. However once configured it will act as a central server for all of your documents and media. In addition they have included lots of Mac features including an iTunes server and compatibility with Time Machine so that you MacBook will be constantly backed up. Cali Lewis raves about them so they must be good. Also they were at the Mac Expo this year. Hope this helps.

That looks perfect, thank you, Mr Cat!
I'll certainly look into that regarding prices and availability.
Peter.

If you fancy a DIY solution offering many of the features of the HP MediaSmart Server thingy (and some additional features / abilities as well) then building a server running MythBuntu could be an option.

Just thought you would like to know that the HP won best in show at Mac Expo There is some irony that the product being awarded Best Of Show at Macworld Expo 2009 is produced by HP and running MS Windows Home Server - if lots of people are raving about it in a (good way) it probably deserved it though.

Irony? Well maybe. I see it as a positive thing. There are other manufacturers out there than Apple. Some of them make some bloody good stuff (this included Microsoft). If the best of it creeps into the Apple universe it can only be good for the the platform.

I didn't mean the "irony" thing in a bad way - just in an ironic way: big bit of hardware in 2006 Best Of Show - Apple MacBook Pro (running OSX) big bits of hardware in 2007 Best Of Show - Axiom ModBook (running OSX) & AppleTV (running modified OSX) big bit of hardware in 2008 Best Of Show - Apple MacBook Air (running OSX) big bit of hardware in 2009 Best Of Show - HP MediaSmart Server (running Windows Home Server)
.... anyway don't want to distract from the real discussion in this thread - a server solution for Peter!
