I have installed OS X on an 8Gb thumb drive.
I am using it to run DiskWarrior and Disk Utility
I have deleted most of the applications and just done the minimal install. Can anybody think of anything I can safely delete to make loading faster? Or indeed any tips from anyone who has done a similar thing.

Sure I once downloaded portableosx. To slim down normal osx have you tried Monolingual?

To slim down normal osx have you tried Monolingual? No I haven't tried it. At the moment there is no need to for me to go that far. I use my thumb drive for occasional trouble shooting only. Still it is a good suggestion and I thank you for it.

Until I got my current monster, I've always used Monolingual to slim my operating system. Never had any problem, although Apple do seem to insist on re-installing all the language/ platform options with system upgrades and some software installers can't cope with the idea that I might not want to have the Klingon version of their software. Haven't used it recently - my hard drive still feels pretty huge!

my hard drive still feels pretty huge! Is that some kind of euphemism?

my hard drive still feels pretty huge! Is that some kind of euphemism? Sounds like one to me! Is it just macs you can boot this from? It would be sweet if you could boot "standard" PCs from it.

OS X is pretty fussy as to what it will install on. I am certain that you can't do this. I doubt that you can do it with the discs that come with your Mac either. AFAIK you need a retail copy of OS X of similar or later vintage of the computer that you want it to work on. It is nice when it works though, you just hold down the alt key when you power up and it shows in the list of devices it can see to boot from. You just pick it and you are away.

This wouldn't work on regular PCs unless you miraculously had hardware which was all OS X-compatible and which was natively supported. There are people using Hackintoshes who boot from USB drives but it's generally an overly-complicated process and it's often easier to install to a local hard drive where there's a lot more space for necessary kexts and whatnot. For Macs, though, this is a decent way of ensuring you have a bootable system at all times.

I, unfortunately in order to keep 100% compatibility with work, have Office for Mac 2008 installed on my MBP.
After running monolingual Office would no longer perform updates. Seems μsoft can't even get it right on Macs!!!

Removing the printer drivers would slim it down a bit too... there is a guide for doing that from a DMG but I'm not sure where, if I come across it I'll post it up...

Just out of interest, how often do you guys rebuild, I only have rebuilt once last year, when FileVault mucked up my machine. I have done it once. When I moved from PPC to Intel. The rest of the time I cloned my system across to the new machine. Or I installed a new OS as an update. When I moved across from my G5 machine though I thought that a rebuild might be prudent. Cat

I also started from scratch when moving from PPC to Intel. I'm waiting for 10.5.7 to see if it fixes my iMac network issues. If it doesn't, a fresh install will happen to that machine. The other machines all seem to be running fine, so no need to reinstall OS X onto them (unlike Windows, which seemed to need a new install every year!). I may start fresh with 10.6 - I've not decided yet.
