I have three external drives. Two Maxtor One Touch HDDs and one Iomega Ultramax. The Maxtors are USB and Firewire 400. The Ultramax is USB, Firewire 400 and Firewire 800. It is also formatted out of the box for the Mac (PC users have to reformat the drive! ;D) I find that sometimes the One Touch HDDs are not recognised by the OS and I have to turn them on and off several times. I don't like this The Ultramax is a bit on the loud side because of the fan in it and glows blue but it is a massive drive (640GB - and now you can get a 1TB version!) and I've had no problems with it. I use the USB connection on it to plug into my Airport Extreme Base Station so its contents (around 500GB of iTunes compatible content) can be used by all the computers in the house plus my Apple TV. You can buy ANY external hard drive and use the inbuilt Disk Utility in Mac OS X to reformat the hard drive to Mac OS Extended. You don't need to buy a hard drive that is already formatted for the Mac.

Thought I should mention that I have the same issue of the One Touch HDD not being recognised, but with my PC. I suspect it's not an OS X issue more a case of buggy peripherals. And it's annoying me too right now as I'm trying to be good and back up but its the only external I have and until it recognises the thing I can't!
