Apps that run in the background. The Apple apps already do run in the background. I am not convinced that more background apps would be a significant improvement to the phone. Certainly not to the battery life of the phone. Cat

Yeah, that's why Apple have introduced push notifications with OS 3.0. An app can register for notifications, and then it can be woken up with data from the apple servers (and from other apps/users), so not have to run all the time waiting for new incoming data.
