Update your Apple TV and your Remote App now.
The new "Touch" remote control interface is luuuuuurvely.
There's something amazing about gesturing on your iPod touch (or iPhone) and watching the AppleTV menus instantly respond on your TV screen.
By the way, the old method of control is still there (good for when you don't want your TV screen turned on but still want to control your AppleTV whilst it is playing through your hifi).

I am still open to the idea of a Apple TV. I need to get my media ripped first though. This could take a while…

Is AppleTV worth getting? As far as I can see all it is is a thing that can play my iTunes library through my TV and rent films. As I explained in a post earlier today about CDs, I won't be using the streaming feature, and I generally don't have fast enough broadband to download full HD films (I can only get between 0.7-1MBps because the phone lines where I live haven't been upgraded since the 1970s or something...)
Sooo... Is it a £195 waste for me, or does it do more that I don't know about?

I've been going through the same deliberations. I too have poor broadband and unlikely to be stream for a couple of years yet. But even then, which I think Apple have found, people don't want to pay for streaming films (yet).
I currently use a Buffalo Linktheatre for my media in the Lounge. This communicates with a Linkstation NAS, which has a built-in media server. I think one or the other will die at some point as they're getting quite old now - and my setup certainly doesn't have the nice Apple interface.
An alternative could be to use an Xbox360, but I don't like the interface for playing media. Oddly, you also have to be online in order to play media too (it reports back to the mothership whenever you play something, which is scary).
There's been quite a bit in the tech press regarding Apple TV recently. Jobs saying "it's a hobby" etc, and it hasn't had the development it deserves, but the software update is encouraging. The name is confusing, and as someone said in a recent podcast it should really be called the iPod TV or similar - that's just what it is for most people.
I also read that someone had successfully replaced the hard disk with a bigger one, so buying the smaller capacity model may save a few pennies (clearly you're not going to get a big library on there initially, though you can access a remote library too I believe).
I think I'll probably succumb in the end and get one.

I've just noticed they work out about £10 cheaper from KRCS when you order online.

Sooo... Is it a £195 waste for me, or does it do more that I don't know about? This is not an easy question to answer. As far as I can see the old traditional divides are as true for this product as they are for most of Apples kit. There will be other ways to get all the features of the ATV. Many will be cheaper, many will have more features and higher specs. And yet none will have that certain something that Apples stuff has. The build quality, the smooth interface, the ease of use, the system integration. With the ATV setting up will be more or less a matter of plugging it in and connecting the HDMI cable. It will link to your network and have access to all the media you have stored on all of your drives. You could have one for each TV in your house and your Gran will be able to use it via the six button Apple remote. Is that a waste of money? I don't know. I do know that I am also considering getting one. Cat

Mr Cat,
I've got one and the main thing for us is that it has revolutionised the way we look at our photos. Traditionally, we would just huddle around a small computer screen and look at the pics once. Now we can just view a slideshow with music from iTunes in our front room. It's lovely to be able to do this and it enables us to view new pics easily and we also spend time looking through old pics too. As for films n stuff, it's easy to rip and convert with handbreak or, my personal fav, VisualHub.
Hope this helps, doone128.

I really must find the time to get this lot organised. We use the screen on the 24" iMac for pics so none too shoddy really, the TV would be better though.
