Sorry about the delay between 54 and 55. Hope British Mac 55 makes up for it though, it's a really beast and is looking to be about twice as long as a normal British Mac!

Re Drobo: the link I gave shows price as £499 incl shipping and VAT. That also includes some hard drives but I don't know the size you get for that price (definitely NOT 1TB!).

Regarding the database app, Apple wants you to purchase FileMaker for that www.filemaker.com/index.html as they own the company! Regarding the app Will couldn't mention, my bet is Pixelmator: www.pixelmator.com/And, regarding using Firewire for booting up a Mac, if you have an Intel Mac, you can also use USB 2.0 hard drives to boot up from.

Hi Mike,
Apple also own Logic Pro but they still give us Garageband as an introductory product, at over £250 Filemaker Pro could hardly be called introductory!
Maybe pixelmator, maybe not (it is actually!) Have you tried it? Fantastic application, definitely an Apple purchase for iLife 09 or even iWork 09.
I didn't know you could boot off a USB 2 for an Intel Mac, but I wouldn't purchase my NAS, the drobo seems a lot better. Mine is a SmartDisk 250GB Network NAS Desktop Hard Drive with USB 2.0/Ethernet Interface. Here's a review from the Apple store, I wished I'd listened:
"The drive comes formatted for FAT32, which makes it useless as a backup drive using Apple's Backup 3, due to the file restriction at 4Gb. Formatting it over to Apple renders the drive unuseable on the network so it finctions only as a USB drive."

I don't think the average home user needs an Access-like database and I wouldn't expect Apple to include one in a software suite costing only £55. Now, if they offered an iWork Professional package that did have a database in it, that's fine. Bummer about your experience with the SmartDisk. With external hard drive prices being so low now, for the majority of people, I think backing up to two external hard drives usually suffices. It's only as I have so much data (over 700GB of media as I type this) that I wanted a method of having an automatic redundancy if anything went wrong and the Drobo is ideal for that. Oh, and not tried Pixelmator but would be interested in a review from you when they allow it!
