Anyone out there dabble in time lapse?
I would love to set an old laptop up in my attic to take maybe 1 or 2 images per day through the window as the houses behind me are demolished and the new ones re-built.
Any suggestions for software?
Tim

If you had a camera that was programmable then it would be possible with iPhoto and iMovie. With a Mac with an iSight camera, could you not do it with Photo Booth, Automator (or a script), iPhoto and iMovie? no idea really, just guessing

I've just been trying out Gawker and it seems a fine app if what you want to do is create a time lapse movie in a single session. What I have in mind is more a time lapse/ web cam. 1 Frame per day for maybe two years. Gawker can cope with this, but only if it runs continually - ie, no shut downs, no crashes, no software upgrades etc etc. As you suspect, Alan, the current version of iMovie has lost its time lapse mode. I do still have iMovie 6, but it seems even more limited than Gawker - "Capture 1 frame every [n] frames" I'll have a read of the articles you link to - what I really want is something which I can plug in, set to start itself up once a day, capture a frame and shut itself down - forget about for a couple of years. I use iStopmotion Tim, it's simple and great for timelapse..but won't do what you require i'm afraid. If you have access to the camera and can press the shutter button once a day, you can sequence the images together in imovie or quicktime pro (import img seq) ..run them at 12 fps, you can condense a year into about 30 seconds. Just remember to take the lens cap off. It won't be much use to you perhaps , but if you're interested in timelapse, i use a Bolex H16 with an intervalometer....that's 16mm cine film with a machine attached that presses the shutter at a pre selected interval. Then use an ultra wide fish-eye lens. This is an amateur outfit in the world of Timelapse, but still cost me around a £1000.00 . Then you have to have the film developed... iStopmotion costs less than £30.00 The other thing i can think of...if you have a good DSLR, it is possible to attach a graphing calculator (about£30.00 SH)which can be modified to 'press the button' at a desired interval. I'll send a link later when i've more time, but in case i forget, Google 'timelapse' and 'graphing calculator' and you'll probably find the right sort of thing. Question is, who has the money to 'lock off' a ,say a good canon DSLR for a year !?...but at least you wouldn't have to buy any software..it's all there on your mac. good luck, simon

here's a link RE; the graphing calculator.. www.tadehbazik.com/tadeh.bazik/Time.Lapse.htmlI realise it's a software app. you're looking for Tim so i hope i'm not wasting your time. If you DO find something that will manage to trigger a point and shoot camera once every 24 hrs, let me know!!

I've found a webcam app called Periscope which looks as though it will do what I want. I can set the TiBook to boot at a set time each day, load Periscope as a startup item which can then capture an image - rather than a movie - which it stores as a separate file, so no problem overwriting the previous file - then set the TiBook to shut itself down.
Now all I have to do is a/ make sure it works with my USB webcam via Macam and b/ find a way of attaching the webcam to the Velux window in such a way that it won't move for several months.
It looks as though Periscope is about to be upgraded to work with MobileMe. If it is, I'll upload the results for all to see. That's if New East Manchester ever get round to starting the demolitions! We've been waiting for 8 years so far!!!!
