After just over a year of owning my Mac, and trying so hard to find out how to use iChat, I think I got it. I just can't believe how long and arduous a process it was to simply sign in and start using it to talk to people. Eventually I found that I could use my Google Mail account info, and found this page on how to set it all up ( www.google.com/support/talk/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=24076). The only problem now is... I have no Buddies. Two of my friends are getting Macs in the next couple of weeks (persuasion on my part), so there's two, but they will be the only two. And it's also very unlikely that they will know how to use iChat, considering they find PCs hard to use. So what I really want to know it: Does anyone here use iChat regularly to keep in touch with people? Why is it so hard to set up compared to something like Adium or MSN Messenger? Does anyone want to be my buddy? Also, for some reason, I can't seem to set my username as what I want... I thought all you would have to do is add 'Alex Richings' and it would add me, but it seems that I have to use my actual GMail address. Is this normal? Thanks in advance...

I must admit I've never used iChat. Being part of the closed Apple world, I just assumed that nobody I knew would be able to talk to me. I have Adium and Skype here for chat, but I find that I much prefer Twitter or email, where the person at the other end can pick up the message at their convenience. With Twitter, there's no assumption that the other end would reply, but that's OK as well.
Once I retire, I'll probably use iChat but until then, I just don't have the time to synchronise my sessions at the laptop with other people.

iChat is just Apple's variant on Yahoo! I used it a lot when I worked from home, and made some good friends through it.
However, since most of them have defected to Farcebook or whatever, I rarely see them on iChat. I don't really do these social notworking [sic] sites, although I have begun to dabble through work.

It is rare that I chat on iChat.
I use iChat more of a support tool for other Mac users. It allows me to screen share, a tool that actually works quite well.
I am ChurchCatUK by the way (Long story).

I am ChurchCatUK by the way (Long story). Thanks, I have added you using my Google Talk account, (which no longer exists) and I found out that I had to use MobileMe. So I signed up to the trial and added you again under the username AlexR1129. If you get either/both, please delete and ignore the one coming from my GMail address.
