The other day I was setting up a new Mac and it occured to me that I always put on the same programs and have my little "setup routine" Software I put on - Firefox - I always put Firefox on mainly as I love Adblock for somesites that flood the page with adverts and love being able to turn it off for sites I support. Safari is good but as I tend to do a lot of online research this is really useful for me.
- The Unarchiver - The best zip tool I've found for the mac. Never used Stuffit, as this free one seemed to do everything I needed
- Handbreak - DVD ripper and re-encoder. Having a iphone means I like to fill it full of films for train journeys and this is one of the best free rippers out there.
- Adium - Not a massive fan of MSN but this one does every IM client I tend to use..apart from
- Skype - still one of the best VOIP out there
- Transmission - small easy to use bittorrent client
- VLC - for...every video..ever
- Perian - for every other video..ever for quicktime
Those are my basics that I put on before PS, office etc So anything you think I'm missing or that you have to install on a clean install?

A few others that I consider to be my 'essential basics' in addition to Firefox, The Unarchiver, Handbrake, VLC & Perian (does that list sound familiar ?) are: - Xee - a lightweight image viewer that works really well with The Unarchiver.
- Growl - I find it to be the least annoying way of getting the information that Growl can provide.
- TrueCrypt - so I can open and create hidden volumes and pretend my information is actually important.
- KeePassX - secure password storage which works across most operating systems.

Growl, I forgot about that - so useful with Adium and Skype. I will have a look at the others, not heard of Xee but looks good. Thanks
