I have just been thumbing through the help pages of Mac User. Some dude has a CD stuck in the drive caused by his version of Clam AV being out of date. (apparently) It seems I often hear of AV causing problems. I have not yet heard of it doing any good. (for the Mac user that is)

I call BS on that. I've had a CD stuck in my drive due to Disc Utility. It just happens and its lazy help guides that will point the finger at anything other than the Mac OS sometimes not being 100% perfect.

Sorry iDan I got it wrong, I miss-read the problem. but my point remains I have never yet heard of AV software actually doing any good. Out of interest the text of the problem read as follows. It is not clear that AV was definitely the problem here but the advice was to change it's settings so that it no longer scanned CDs and DVDs.

Yes but that seems to me like default "I don't know what problem it is" advice.

Hmm, I have just read another article in MacUser in praise of the Kaspersky AV for Mac. It has a database of 25 million malicious programs apparently. It downloads updates every couple of hours in order to keep your computer up to date with the viruses being released. That is pretty impressive. No viruses for Mac yet of course but I expect that they will be coming soon and then it will be money well spent.

Money who spends money on AV? People who run a platform with 25 million ever mutating malware variations apparently. Oh, and some Mac users who are worried that one day one of them will affect their platform.

I'll confess - I sort of spent money. I got Intego Virusbarrier as part of one of the software bundles. I actually bought it for something else - can't remember what now - may have been Disk Warrier. I installed it and instantly regretted it, kept it for the year's subscription, but when they demanded more money, I trashed it. It was a pain to uninstall, btw.
On another track, anyone been around long enough to remember Disinfectant? I had it for years on old System 7 machines! Ah, happy days.

Probably a piece of software that Heather's mum told her about when she was just a young girl.

I bought the same product. It put a bright yellow icon in my menu bar that took me weeks to figure how to disable. Uninstalling was a real pain too. I kept it for two years and it never found a single piece of malware in all that time. I was obviously going to the wrong porn sites.
