I think CyberChimp has hit the nail on the head. Just come across this in a forum here: discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1372058"For anyone else who is as temporarily clueless as the rest of us, when "output not supported" is stated, this is in reference to the input. To alter the output variables, one must pull down the "properties for:" tab (which is probably set to "built in microphone" or "built in input") and select "built-in output". "

Doh.....Yeah, I'm a noob...lol
Well, just tried that and got to the output settings and tried every combination I could and still does not work...!!
I still can't delete QT which is annoying because usually a delete and reinstall solves most things. I really am at a loss with this one!
I do have VLC and am using that for every thing at the moment but, it tells me there is some thing wrong some where that needs fixing if some thing doesnt work properly and could have a knock on effect with other programs...

If you're able to get Audio MIDI Setup to show properties for "Built-in Output", then ideally the "Audio Output" "Format" should be set for something close to 44100 Hz. An alternative way of getting a Mac's sound settings working correctly which is reported as sometimes working is to start and then quit GarageBand.app

That's the first time I've ever started Garageband...!! That hasn't worked either I'm afraid....But, the sound was working fine in Garageband.

What was the Audio Output Format set at in Hz when you got it to open?

44100
I then tried all the other variations but nothing worked.

If it was greyed it in your generic system audio/MIDI setup and that was causing the problem iTunes and web streams wouldn't play would it not, that is interesting though, have a look in the prefs for iTunes, GarageBand and any other audio based app, see what they say...

Unless anyone else can come up with something better than I can, my only remaining suggestions would be:
(long shot) create a new user account and see if the problem exists there as well - won't fix anything, but could help pin down if it's a computer wide or user specific issue (I always create a 'dummy account' when I set up a new system for this purpose).
If you're still within AppleCare warranty, book it in for a visit to the Genius Bar up at the Apple Store in West Quays - and if you're not within warranty they may still suggest something
Only other thing I can think of really is the possibility it being fixed by carrying out an archive and install of Leopard (having created a full cloned backup first) - but I'd probably try the Apple Store first.

Chimp, is there a way to get to the quicktime safari plugin - ie prefs or maybe just data because he says the web streams work, I would check myself but on iPhone, probably in the safari prefs

If there is an external audio interface you could try it with that would be a good idea

At last, I've done it....!!! It seems I had a broken component of the XviD codec some where along the line. I decided to delete all the other players and see if this had any effect and it did, luckily the first one I tried! I got rid of the plist for it and the codec in the QT library and voila - I now have audio again in QT...... Thanks to every one for helping, you've all been great and I've certainly learned a lot more about the way a Mac works from this little episode. Cheers again
