A couple of weeks ago out of the blue Quicktime stopped producing sound on my iMac. I can't listen to any form of audio on it at all. I have VLC and that plays every thing fine. I've tried all the sound buttons/sliders to no avail. I've also re-installed it, deleted it then re-installed it again and it still will play no audio, video is fine just no sound. Is there a simple tick box/setting some where that a Mac newbie like me is missing? Or has this happened to any one else? Cheers *Just realised I've posted this in the wrong forum Please move to the correct one Mr Cat....

Just about to ask that myself... Have you tried deleting the plist for QuickTime, probably under Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences. Also try checking for updates

P.S Is it both web streams and local video that is affected?

In partial answer to Jinja's question about preference options: QuickTime Player's preferences (accessed from within QuickTime Player when it is running) include some click boxes which relate to: (a) whether sound is only played from the foremost QuickTime Player window. (b) sound being played (or not) when QuickTime Player is in the background. however- QuickTime is a framework responsible for a lot of the multimedia features used by several applications on a Mac.
- QuickTime Player.app is one of the applications (iTunes.app being another) which use the QuickTime framework to make them work.
QuickTime (the overall framework itself) also has a separate set of preferences (accessed from the QuickTime Pane in System Preferences). ------------ In addition to other peoples' questions, a couple of other quickies might also help pin down the cause: Which versions of QuickTime + QuickTime Player have you got installed (both these sets of info will be shown in the "About QuickTime Player window accessed from QuickTime Player)? Which version of Mac OS are you running? Have you got any additional 3rd-party components for QuickTime installed (ie. Flip4Mac, Perian, XiphQT, etc) - and if so what versions? Did you install (or update) any audio or video related software (or hardware drivers) around the same time as sound playback in QuickTime / QuickTime Player stopped?

Do you use the built-in sound or do you have an external audio interface?

Ok...Answers to questions: iTunes plays fine. Not tried deleting the plist - will give that a go and yes totally updated. Web streams play fine, only local video affected. Of the sound boxes in preferences all three are ticked... Quicktime version is 7.5.5 OSX version is 10.5.6 3rd party software installed is VLC, DivX Player/Converter, Flip4Mac & Xvid (all working fine and haven't changed any of their settings since installing them) Can't remember installing any thing around the time it stopped working but, not 100% certain. Sound is the inbuilt sound card. Really has me this one...!!! Even after a total delete and re-install it still doesn't work!

Update...
Deleted all the plists in the library for user and main mac drive. Tried to delete Quicktime and it wont let me delete it from my system stating it's a protected program even though I haven't set it as one in AppCleaner(deleter I'm using).
I've re-installed it again over the old quicktime but, it still doesn't work...!!! This is starting to get frustrating...!!

When you say you've just tried to delete 'QuickTime' and been denied, due to it being a protected programme, were you trying to delete: QuickTime Player.app (which would probably be located within your HardDrive>Applications folder), or QuickTime (which would have been located either within your HardDrive>Library folder or HardDrive>System>Library folder)?

OK, this is a really dumb question - but is it all videos that have no sound? The specific video you are trying in quicktime does play with sound using VLC?

cyberchimp - trying to delete the .app in applications.
Barryj21 - it's affecting all videos, no sound at all in QT. VLC is fine, every thing plays fine there.

A few more questions I'm afraid: - Do you have more than one user account set up on your Mac - and if so is the audio in QuickTime Player.app affected in all of them, or just your user account?
- If you go to Applications>Utilities>Audio MIDI Setup.app and click on the "Audio Devices" button, what details is it giving for your "Audio Output" settings?
- Finally a daft question - I assume the media files which won't playback audio through QuickTime Player.app all used to work properly before.

Not sure if this will help, but I just came across this: forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=49021The last post says "I fixed the problem by changing my QuickTime Audio settings to 96 kHz, 24 bit (Uncheck Safe mode)." Maybe that will help? Fingers crossed.

Think we might be getting some where, just not sure where...!!
CyberChimp - Only have the one account (admin). The audio output section is greyed out and it says Output Not Supported...!!! (Whats all that about?). Yes, all the files used to work properly before.
I think the bold is the problem, just not sure whats causing it.
barryj21 - Thanks for that, but the problem is that the output settings is greyed out and I cant change any thing!
Do I need to re-install the audio midi control/setup?

Is "Built-in Audio" selected in the pull down menu thingy for "Properties For:" in the Audio Midi Setup window?
